WhatsMyName username search

Check a username across 650+ sites using the WhatsMyName list, the strictest of the open username datasets.

Runs WhatsMyName by Micah Hoffman and the WhatsMyName contributors (CC BY-SA 4.0). 654 sites from WebBreacher/WhatsMyName@4397f1f, synced 2026-10-14. Not affiliated with the project.

How WhatsMyName works here

Every WhatsMyName entry has two tests: the status code and a string that appears on a real profile, plus the code and string a missing profile returns. A site only counts as found when both match.

The list is maintained by hand and tested often, and it is the dataset behind several other tools, including Blackbird. Sites the project marks as behind a captcha or bot wall are skipped.

How to read the results

Found
Both the status code and the profile text matched.
Not found
The site answered like a missing profile.
Could not check
Timed out, rate-limited, or blocked.

What this free check cannot tell you

  • Fewer sites than Maigret; the list trades coverage for precision.
  • A found profile shares the name, not necessarily the person.
  • Checks existence only; it does not read the profile.

When the free check is not enough

WhatsMyName tells you where an account exists. SearchIn returns the identity data and breach exposure behind the handle.

What people use it for

  • A precise first pass when false positives would waste your time
  • Building a defensible list of accounts for a report
  • Cross-checking a Sherlock or Maigret hit

FAQ

WhatsMyName, answered

Is this the official WhatsMyName site?

No. The project's own web app is at whatsmyname.app. This page runs the same open dataset (CC BY-SA 4.0) on our servers and credits the project and its contributors.

Why does WhatsMyName find fewer accounts than Maigret?

Its list is shorter and every check has to pass two conditions. You see fewer hits, and more of them are real.

How do I run WhatsMyName locally?

The project is a dataset, not a CLI. Blackbird is the most common local runner for it; the command is on this page.

Do you store what I search?

No. The username, email, phone, or domain you enter is sent in the request body, never in a URL, and it is not logged. Results are cached for a few hours under a one-way hash of the input so a repeat search is fast, then they expire.

Why is this free?

Because the first pass should cost nothing. These checks use open-source tools and free public data. When a result needs commercial data, such as people-search modules or breach records, SearchIn runs those as paid lookups with a receipt.
