FAQ

Free OSINT tools, answered

Are these the real open-source tools?

Holehe and user-scanner run unmodified in isolated containers. Sherlock, Maigret, WhatsMyName, and Blackbird run their own site lists and detection rules on a lightweight engine built for the browser. PhoneInfoga's keyless scanners are rebuilt on the same phone library it uses. Every page names the project, its licence, and its authors.

Do I need an account?

No. Every tool here works without signing in. Each tool limits how many searches one network can run per minute so the servers stay usable for everyone.

Which username tool should I use?

WhatsMyName for precision, Sherlock for a fast first pass, Maigret for coverage, and user-scanner for the widest sweep, which takes longer. Blackbird runs the WhatsMyName list and also checks emails.

What do the free tools not do?

They tell you that an account or record exists. They do not tell you who is behind it, and they do not search breach databases or commercial people-search data. That is what SearchIn's paid lookups are for.

Can I use these for any investigation?

Use them only on people and organisations you are authorised to investigate, and follow the laws and site terms that apply to you. Account existence is personal data in many places.
